Dr. Bill Lang is Senior Advisor for Population Health and Medical Preparedness with the Winkenwerder Company. In addition, he currently serves in several roles in the Washington area, including as a Senior Director at Shoreland, Inc., publisher of international health threat, countermeasures, and mitigation information, and as a consultant in health information systems and medical contingency planning.
Prior to joining the Winkenwerder Company, Dr. Lang served in the United States Army for 29 years holding key positions within the military medical and information management establishment. Dr. Lang was selected as the Army White House Physician, reporting to the White House in 1996, where he served for three years. Following his initial tour at the White House, Dr. Lang was assigned as Physician Consultant for Medical Information Management on the staff of the Surgeon General of the US Army and as Director of Clinical Information Requirements for the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs).
In late 2000, Dr. Lang returned to the White House Medical Unit as Deputy Director, becoming Director in 2006. A primary responsibility was coordinating medical preparations for White House travel around the world, including personally coordinating on-site with local medical support in over 80 countries worldwide and every state in the United States, except Alaska. He was additionally responsible to the White House staff for coordination of emergency and urgent care services for White House visitors and the 5000 White House staff members and for the medical aspects of mass casualty, terrorism, pandemic, and weapons of mass destruction planning and response supporting White House operations.
Dr. Lang also served as the Associate Chief Medical Officer for the US Department of Homeland Security and was the primary consultant to the Department for public health and medical issues affecting their staffs. Additionally, he was responsible for developing mechanisms for the departmental-level support and integration of the medical aspects of occupational safety and health programs, force health protection, and operational medical support.
Dr. Lang holds a BS degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he was a “Distinguished Graduate,” an M.D. degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, and Masters degree of Healthcare Administration from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
